The Replacement of Local Stop Cable for Stop Machines The scope of this project included the replacement of local cables for stop machines at 315 locations on the 6th and 8th Avenue lines in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Circuit modifications for a significant number of these locations were also required to enhance the safety of the existing system. The cables that were replaced were originally installed in the 1930s, and their installation location below the track bed made them susceptible to failure. The original contract plan provided for nightly track shutdowns in the work areas. TC Electric was able to effectively utilize longer-duration weekend shutdowns by piggybacking on other contractors's shutdowns to significantly advance the work in an efficient manner. We were able to work continuously throughout the weekend, and not have to use the allocated shutdowns in our contract. TC Electric was able to work more productively, NYCT did not have to expend resources required for the shutdowns in our contract, and the service disruptions experienced by the riding public was minimized. TC Electric achieved excellent safety and quality audit ratings during the contract and received a safety award from New York City Transit System Safety for this project. This $10 million project began in December 2007. Originally slated for completion in November 2010, TC completed the project 14 months ahead of schedule in September 2009.
