MTA C&D Rutgers Tunnel Rehabilitation
Tunnel Rehabilitation
CONTRACT VALUE: $108 Million
The project involved the design, furnishing, and installation of a new cable management rack system (CMRS) throughout the entire length of the tunnel. Over 55,000 feet of copper communication cables, 33,000 feet of fiber optic cables, and approximately 24,000 feet of antenna cables were furnished and installed. Tracks B1 and B2 were rehabilitated, transforming the existing Type II track into a modified Type II track. Signal heads, stop machines, and cables were replaced at four locations, while track cases were relocated out of the flood zone, and submersible junction boxes were installed.
At the Rutgers Slip Fan Plant #6375, dampers, actuators, silencers, and ductwork were removed and replaced. Eight pumps (four 850 GPM pumps and four 200 GPM pumps) were removed and replaced, including controls, heat trace, insulation, and discharge lines, at pump rooms PR#2117 (Mid River) and PR#2118 (Under River), with additional modifications made at PR#2116 and PR#2119.
New electrical pump feeds, including emergency generator connections from street level, were installed along with a new two-hour fire-rated LED tunnel lighting system, including MC cables. The project also replaced negative equalizers, positive jumpers (4,000 feet of 500MCM), battery and control cables (approximately 15,000 feet), and tube shell cabling (3,000 feet of 2000KCMIL and 1,000 feet of 500KCMIL). Civil work included spall and crack repairs, chemical grouting, the construction of a generator platform foundation, the installation of doors, painting, and the addition of signage. Most of the construction work was completed in 3 months of weekend General Orders.
The project received the 2022 ASCE Metropolitan Section’s Design-Build Project of the Year Award.
