Rehabilitation of Line Viaduct

CONTRACT VALUE: $189 Million

The Culver Line viaduct, located between the Carroll and Fourth Avenue Station portals, is a four-track system including two stations. The 90+ foot-high viaduct spans the Gowanus Canal and various streets in Brooklyn. Prior to this project, the viaduct was severely deteriorated, with spalled concrete at the encased structural steel members supporting the viaduct, leaking joints, inadequate scupper drains and down spouts as well as severe decay of the concrete deck with exposed steel and rebar.

TCE's Systems integration was a key component of the Culver Line rehabilitation project. One of the first major challenges was the signal system. To advance the project from the first phase into the second phase, our JV was required to move trains from their normal track to a newly constructed track that was installed during the first phase. This new track needed to be put in service with the existing signal control system due to the long lead time of the relay room equipment required for the new signal control system. We designed a plan and schedule for the signal.
